  1. A cam is part of a machine that converts 
  2. circular motion to linear motion or vice 
  3. versa. The edge cam in a car engine is in
  4. the form of a rounded projection on a shaft,
  5. the camshaft. When the camshaft turns, the
  6. cams press against linkages that open the
  7. valves in the cylinders. A face cam is a 
  8. disc with a groove in its face, in which
  9. the follower travels. A cylindrical cam 
  10. carries angled parallel grooves, which 
  11. impart a to-and-fro motion to the follower
  12. when it rotates.
